Explore Chiang Rai

There is so much to see and do in Chiang Rai, we thought it would be a good idea to give you some suggestions:

White Temple

Wat Rong Khun aka the White Temple has become the most popular attraction in Chiang Rai. It is not an active Buddhist temple because it has no monks residing, but is very impressive to see.

The Black House

The Black House or Baan Dam is the life work of National Thai Artist Thawan Duchanee. The “museum” is made up of around 40 artistic structures spread over the grounds of the artist’s last residence and resting place. Inside some of the halls, banquet tables are set for a meeting of demons. Skulls, skins, horns, and taxidermy make Baan Dam… Well, one of the spookiest settings in all of Thailand. Even the many outdoor sculptures force you to pause and contemplate.

Chiang Rai Night Bazaar

The night bazaar is open every Saturday between 4.30pm and 00.30am, Thana Lai Road closes to traffic and opens up for people to wander through the stalls. You will find the quality work of local artisans as well as great food.

A good visual cue is: if the Chinese lanterns are lit, entertainers and musicians are performing

Blue Temple

Wat Rong Seur Ten aka the Blue Temple is immediately recognisable for its brilliant shade of rich sapphire. The temple walls, roof, and surrounding statues are all covered in this gorgeous hue, an unusual decorative choice in a country where most temples are made of gold. This colour is symbolically associated with purity, wisdom, and the lack of materialism that Buddhists aspire to.

Doi Mae Salong

Doi Mae Salong is the site of Santi Khiri Village, a community settled by the former Chinese 93rd Division who moved from Myanmar to reside on Thai territory in 1961. The village became well known for its enchanting scenery and tranquil atmosphere. Today it is a major tourist attraction with its small-town ambience, delicious native Chinese dishes, small hotels and guesthouses catering to visitors and tea, coffee and fruit tree plantations. The scenery is especially picturesque in December and January when sakuras are in full bloom. Scattered with many hill tribe villages, Doi Mae Salong is ideal for Trekking.
